VLM

Thank you for supporting VLM Camp Vermilion & Camp Hiawatha at our Annual Camp Sunday!

We are once again sending many of our youth to camp this summer, and if you want to support this important ministry, you can designate your giving at anytime toward our cost of sending youth. We want to be able to help every family send their children if they have an interest in attending camp. It is a wonderful experience, and a great way to assist in the spiritual formation of a young person as they grow in their faith. Thank you for considering~

Now Hiring Summer Staff!!!

The privilege to change our world by investing ourselves in the lives of children is the best way to spend a summer.

We are seeking college-aged adults to be part of our summer community. Not only will you impact the life of our campers, but you’ll also gain skills in leadership, problem solving, small group development, worship planning, and more. You’ll also grow in your own faith as you dig into what it means to Weave JOY. And all of this as you enjoy the beauty of God’s great northwoods!

In addition to counselors, we are also seeking kitchen staff (head cooks and assistants), waterfront directors, health care managers, canteen managers, maintenance assistants and leadership staff.

If you, or someone you know, is interested in learning more, go to our Summer Employment page. You can also find the application there.

Happy February OSLC!

Pastor and I had a meeting sometime this last month in which we were recapping all the events that had transpired over the season of Advent. We shared all the joys we had with the season, as well as the busyness of it all! We came to the conclusion that the busyness has simply just carried over to the New Year, as we see our building being oh so active every single day! As I get to know our members on a deeper level with the more time I spend here, I am continually surprised with the generosity that our Congregation has to support our mission and outreach we have. On January 20th, I became a member of Our Savior’s, and it brings me joy to be connected with our members on a new level!

Sunday School will be back in full swing for the month of February! After meeting with parents and our Sunday School volunteers, I’ve decided we are going in deep to explore some of our biggest Bible stories! From Noah and the Ark to the parables that Jesus told, we feel the need to revisit these important Biblical stories to really give our students a foundation for greater learning possibilities in future. Our lessons will change depending on the particular story, as I work with our volunteers to determine the best ways we can get the message to our students. I am excited to start this new unit with our students, and learn what our students already know!

Confirmation classes are now at Gethsemane for the remainder of the Confirmation year! We had a glorious time at Our Savior’s which included meeting seven times for class, our caroling event, as well as a fellowship movie night! As we look ahead to February and beyond our students will continue to tackle complex subject areas crucial to our faith. Our 6-8th graders will explore Holy Baptism, Communion, Confession, Forgiveness, and Daily Prayers. Our 9th grade class will go into detail about the Two Kingdoms, Vocation, Worship, and Doubt before we get into Ash Wednesday and Lenten Worships. Members of each congregation are currently meeting to plan Lenten Worships, so more information about how our Confirmation youth will involved in those services will be released shortly! We have a retreat opportunity towards the end of February on the 22nd and 23rd at Camp Vermillion! As always if you have any questions about our youth programs or would like to get involved, please let me know!

NewYear-NewYou-header

A New Year. . .

Jeremiah 29:11 For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me.

Happy New Year! I hope this newsletter finds you all well. I hope everyone had a Christmas filled with wonder, peace and cheer. Last month, the church was busy and full of activity. I want to send a special thank you to all of you for your prayers, participation, generosity and faithfulness during the Christmas season. The things you do and the love you share are very much appreciated.

Even though I am a bit melancholy because I must wait and entire 11 months until Advent/Christmas comes again, I am excited about events that are coming up this next year. Specially, welcoming new members on Jan. 20 and making congregation plans at the annual meeting on Jan 27th. Also in January, we are going to start fund raising for a renovation project in the West Wing Conference Room. Currently, there are over a dozen groups that meet in the west wing during the week. All these groups are focused on helping others flourish in life and making the world a better place. I counted all the people who participate in these groups and I found that the West Wing Conference Room is the most used room in our building (including the sanctuary on Sunday morning). Given the high use of the room and the positive impact of the groups who use the room, the church council and I thought it would be an effective use of God’s resources to show the individuals who use the room how much they are cared for by making it more functional and intentional. Specifically, we plan on putting in new upper and lower cabinets and a countertop. There has already been some needed and appreciated plumbing work done.  Please consider making a donation to help with this project. Designate your giving, “West Wing Conference Room Renovation.” Thank you.

This January I am also celebrating our amazing confirmation program. OSLC is hosting confirmation for the month. If you would like to help prepare the Wednesday evening meal for the kids, your participation is welcome and needed. There is so much positivity, learning, and relationship building happening with our young people.

On January 10th at 2 PM there will be a meeting in the fireside room for anyone interested in joining the next Honduras trip. The trip will be a week after Easter for 8 days. I am really looking forward to the next trip, we are going to be focused on visiting as many of the worshiping communities in Honduras (and eating lots of tamales). I am very proud that OSLC reflects in our church constitution our passion and commitment in supporting local, state, national, and global ministries.

I also want to update everyone about what the OMG (Our Saviors, Messiah, Gethsemane) committee has been discussing lately. Now, we are just looking at our calendars to find times and ways to worship and enjoy fellowship with each other. We anticipate a shared mid-week Lent and Holy Week (week before Easter) worship.

Your co-worker in Christ- Pastor Erik

Joint Confirmation Service Retreat at Camp Vermilion with Gethsemane

We had so much fun at Camp Vermilion last Saturday, volunteering with the Confirmation Class from Gethsemane Lutheran Church! Together we built 2 new ball boxes, dug new trenches to divert water on the hill, bud-capped a hill of pines, and enjoyed the fall colors, the lake, and Gaga Ball! Thank you to Andy and Grant for hosting us and to Kai for preparing a delicious lunch for us! Such a beautiful day working and playing in God’s great northwoods! Click here to view more photos!

Camp Sunday – Jan. 11th

We hope you’ll join us at worship Sunday, January 11 for Camp vccSunday! Our Savior’s Lutheran Church is a member of Voyageur’s Lutheran Ministry and shares a long history with the two VLM camps, Camp Hiawatha and Camp Vermilion. This summer Sr. High youth from OSLC will be going on a Voyageur’s Canoe Country adventure in the BWCAW with VLM.

campfireGretchen Bachman, VLM’s Program Director, will be sharing the message at worship that Sunday and will be available to answer all of your questions about our shared ministry. During Bible Quest we will worship together in a campfire led by OSLC campers. If you have a favorite song to request, just email Meagan!
